The Jung Center in Houston featured a group exhibition of the Carranza family reflecting upon when Susan Carranza struggled with cancer. The exhibition highlights the emotional expressions of hope, eventual remission and reflection from different perspectives: Susan Carranza, her husband, and their son, Joel.

The exhibition consists of fifteen large black to white, cineary toned, drawings by Elihu Carranza. These drawings reflect the initial period of diagnosis and treatment, capturing his struggle with potential loss. Susan’s fifteen hand crafted paper collages are the central focus of the exhibition. Her collages colorfully render a reflective journey of collective celebration, even as cancer reappeared a second time over a ten-year period. The entrance gallery at the Jung Center displays Joel Carranza’s shimmering color photographs of plant life. The photographic vibrancy is as mysterious as the miracle of healing. His photographic images are optimistic both then and now, and so necessary when Susan was first diagnosed with cancer.

This collection exhibits a powerful array of abstract, meditative forms and organic images, which serve as portrait of the family, then and now. Throughout the exhibition there is a recurring theme of overcoming loss for optimism without relinquishing creativity and spirited life.
